ViewNX is the ultimate easy yet powerful image browser from Nikon. With fast viewing of JPEG, TIFF and NEF files your workflow will speed up using it. View NX is designed for easy integration with Nikon Transfer and Capture NX software. Using it you can convert RAW NEF and RAW NRW files to JPEG and TIFF format with ease. You can do quick adjustments like changing white balance, exposure compensation, Picture Controls and much more. If you want to make more than just simple adjustments, you can use a more advanced tool like Capture NX or Adobe Camera Raw, but they are costly and more complex solutions.

One nice thing you can also do with View NX is the possiblility to upload your pictures to Nikon’s web sharing site, .

After installing Nikon ViewNX from the CD enclosed in your camera box, or downloaded directly from Nikon website, connect your camera to the computer and download your images using Nikon Transfer utility, then open ViewNX.

First check please the software preferences. You can specify the default color profile and device and as well the printer profiles. You can also select how the image is viewed and previewed.

The metadata tab allows you to manage your images. You can see the original image data, including all the exposure information, resolution and camera type. You can also assign star values, tags, keywords, locations and descriptions. You can sort your database, so for instance, you could sort all your best pictures to put together a portfolio piece. This flexibility allows you to create a personalized image management system to fit your needs.

The quick fix tab allows you to do basic image post processing like white balance, sharpness, contrast and color. If you need more editing control over the image you can launch the Picture Control Utility. This picture control utility gives you good image editing capabilities. You can load in preset picture controls which are really color profiles. You can also create your own profile and save it by making curve adjustments. Use the eyedroppers to select and fix the highlight and shadow and save the curve under a unique name. You will then find it under the picture controls when you scroll through the list.

Apart of these management and adjustements functions, View NX let you delete, rotate, see the focus point, etc in a very easy way.

In conclusion, this is a powerful piece of software provided for free with the purchase of a Nikon camera. People may tell you that you have to get Adobe Photoshop, Capture NX or other expensive graphic software  but why to not try ViewNX for a while? If you are like me and you do not like to do much post processing, View NX can solve easy, fast and for free your most important tasks.

If you use ViewNX I would love to see a comment from you to this post, bringing your experience to our readers attention.
