With technology changing so fast a photographic camera become obsolete in less than five years now. That’s why people show a huge interest in the new products coming on the market. Every month the competition brings new cameras and we know that Nikon is not sleeping but working hard to keep the competition far away. So we are legitimate to expect digital goodies from Nikon and many of us try to make predictions… what camera will be upgraded or replaced and what improvements will show the new bodies… The anticipation is even greater since Nikon’s policy is to not offer any information about future products until they are next to the door of the store.
If we look at Nikon’s cycle of production for new bodies we see a pattern, so in this regard, we do not know for sure what and when we will see something new on the market but at least we can identify the areas where is a bigger chance for a new body. As we already know, last year Nikon was active both on the low end and on the high end of its DSLR offer, bringing three new bodies: D5000, D3000 and D3s. D5000 is a body designed for enthusiasts that are quite new in photography, as a cheaper and less powerful version of D90. D3000 is now the entry level camera after it replaced the “old” D40. On the other side, D3s is the ultimate success of Nikon’s engineers, bringing improvements that are incredible, especially in high ISO behavior. D3s is so good that many Canon shooters are migrating with high expenses to Nikon systems, in order to enjoy the power of AF, the great ISO performance and the versatility of Nikon CLS. While D3000 and D5000 are very good tools for those entering now in DSLRs world, and D3s is the dream camera for every photographer, still at a very high price, many people are expecting that this year Nikon to diversify its middle offer.
IMHO in 2010 we will see at least one new DX camera, either an upgrade to D90 (maybe D9000?) which is already two years old, or a replacement for D300 (maybe D400) that was launched back in 2007. For sure the new DX camera will be powered by a new improved CMOS sensor, very possible with 16 MP, but surely with better ISO performance and as well with an improved AF module. Nikon can’t stay passive when competition is active… that is for sure. If we will see anything like D400, apart of these improvements surely it will inherit all bells and whistles introduced in D300s and maybe some new ones. Nikon knows that we love to be surprised and for sure is keeping some good surprises at hand!
Also sometime during 2010 we shall see a new “budget” FX camera, as an improvement or a replacement for D700. So it will be either D700s(x) or D800. I am sure that it will not be a crazy expensive body… because Nikon wants to encourage advanced DX shooters to migrate to FX. Why? Because migrating to FX means purchasing good glass, appropriate with the resolving power of FX bodies. So this will jump the sales of the holy trinity: 14-24, 24-70 and 70-200, as well of other good primes like 24mm/f1.4, 85mm/f1.4, 200mm/f2 and so on. Honestly I am expected in fact to see coming on the market both a D700s (or x) and a D800. Why? That’s simple!
D700 is one of the best bodies from Nikon history. It still sells very well and many people are very happy with its performance. Surely if Nikon will bring an update with an improved sensor (possible the one in D3s), with all bells and whistles from D300s, including what I hate but it seems that becomes a norm (video…) many D300 owners will jump directly to FX with this new camera, boosting the glass market as well. In the same time the new D800 (or D4) will be a 16 or even a 24MP camera, with identical ISO performance like D3s, a great frame rate and some improvements that nobody anticipates.
I hope you like my story and I still have your attention! I must say again that nobody know what’s next but at least this is my dream and I really hope that it will come true. Sometime in 2010! Surely the future is bright with Nikon, so stick with this brand because of the good performance of this system, both in good light and in very low light.
In the same time I am very interested in your own predictions and / or expectations. As you see, because Nikon Planet is a new site, not many people are familiar over here enough to leave comments. Would you like to break the ice, please?

Congrats for your website! It is very interesting and with lot of good information.
I hope to see at least some of your predictions to happen this year! It will be really nice, especially a D800! My pocket is ready to loose weight again! D300 has been a nice tool for me but now I am ready to go to the next step.
