Understanding manual focus lenses from Nikon

Have you ever been in confusion with the terminology used to describe the old type of lenses that are with manual focus? If you are like me you would be very excited to see how great many of these old gems are performing on the ultimate DSLR’s from Nikon. This glass is so good that even many Canon users are adapting them for their mount. The big problem is that if you do not know them you can try to mount a lens that is not compatible with your F mount and you can damage your camera.

There are many good sources of information on the web about different versions of Nikon lenses but a very good article has been recently published on the blog of the very respected dealer of used gear, KEH. If you are interested to try some of the older lenses on your DSLR I recommend you to read carefully this article.

As a personal note, I am very pleased every time when I use lenses like 35/2 AI-S, the little pancake 45/2.8 AI-P, the ultra-fast 50/1.2 AI-S or the legendary 105/2.5 AI-S. Nikon 200/4 AI-S is an incredible small telephoto lens and works as a charm with extension tubes for close-up. All these lenses are built like a tank, only metal and glass… very good quality glass.

In fact, in a non-scientific test that I did, involving every version of 50mm lens with autofocus from Nikon shot at f2… no one is equal with 50/1.2 AI-S… and I do not count here only sharpness… but also bokeh, the way it draws the image, color rendition, character… So if you are not a fanatic for fast… i.e. fast food, fast autofocus, fast life… and wanna slow down a little bit to manual focus… for a few dollars if you hunt carefully you can get very good glass to play with. Make sure to share with us your experience, please!
