D400 and D800 may be released very soon! D300s, D700 and D90 are officially discontinued

Finally Nikon D300, Nikon D700 and Nikon D90 are officially discontinued. See here on Nikon website. This is a very strong sign that the release of Nikon D400 and Nikon D800 is at the door. It is the time… D300 has been launched back in 2007 and D700 in 2008.

Regarding D800 there are a lot of rumors, i.e. 36MB sensor, same size like D700, dual card (CF and SD), etc… but D400 seems to be a very well-kept secret. If I have to guess it will wear a 24MP sensor, improved frame rate and the AF abilities of D4. I am also thinking that D400 will have an integrate grip, being more like a pro grade camera, aiming sport and wildlife shooters. It would be great if it will have an integrated GPS but it seems that Nikon is not making steps in this direction.

What I dunno is if what we are expecting to be the successor of D700 will be called D800 and if the successor of D300 will be called D400. It is a good time for Nikon to rearrange the names… And logically if D4 is the flagship, D400 have to be the FX lower version and D4000 to be the DX flagship. But this is simply a speculation from my part, don’t take it as a quote from Scripture :)

I’m not sure but it is possible to see a D90 successor too… something between D5100 and D7000. A camera with a more plasticky body, AF motor, integrated flash commander for CLS, AF module from D5100… like a poor brother of D7000 but at a smaller cost, aiming to repeat the huge success D90 recorded in the market.

No sign yet about a small form factor FX camera from Nikon. I really hope Nikon will throw the ‘outdated’ sensor from D3s in a D5100 kind of body, of course from magnesium alloy… with less bells and whistles, a small frame rate, no AF-S motor… just for the pleasure to use a good camera in vacations or when shooting on streets… And of course to give it a great viewfinder, at least the one from FM3A, to make happy those like me who love manual focus.
